[Optional] Improv Comedy Workshop
Life doesn't come with a script. There are bound to be moments in our careers when we’re caught off guard and need to rely on improv skills and trusting our instincts. How do we embody “yes and,” active listening, and other crucial methods in a leader’s toolkit? Also, don't we all just need a little fun right now? Please join me for an improv workshop where we will play short-form games and exercises. No experience necessary. This is a creative outlet and opportunity for some much-needed laughter.

Academic Jewish Studies and the Contemporary Rabbinate
In this elective we will discuss the various roles played by Jewish Studies in the contemporary rabbinate, asking questions like, “How should we study Torah, and why?” “Should rabbis be ‘experts,’ and if so, then experts at what?” “How may their expertise be informed by academic Jewish Studies?” “How should Jewish Studies factor into the training of rabbis?” “What kind of collegial relationships should there be between rabbis and scholars of Jewish Studies?” and more. While we do not plan on finishing this elective with any clear-cut answers to these questions, we do hope to come out with better understandings of how we see Jewish Studies informing the work of rabbis in North America.

Angels and Demons After the COVID-19 Vaccine: Jewish Thought on Scientific Progress
With the creation of a COVID-19 Vaccine, we are hopefully beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Through the power of science, humanity has once again triumphed over adversity. But is there a cost to that progress? Using a passage from Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, we will explore whether there is a Jewish of value of scientific progress and, if so, the opportunities and challenges that such advancements herald. Among others, we will focus on works from Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Hassidic Rabbi Tzadok of Lublin, and Chief Rabbi Avraham Isaac Kook.

Shtark Raving Mad: Is there a line between religious practice and mental illness?
A young man in rural Arkansas speaks in tongues. A middle-aged woman cleans her home for pesach with a toothbrush. One of your Hebrew school students says she can hear god answering her prayers. What can the sometimes-blurry line between religious practice and mental illness tell us about the changing roles of religion and mental health for American Jews across the denominational spectrum. We’ll look at one example of this blurry line through a case study and we’ll open up a conversation about what different theories of mental health have to say about our roles in supporting our students, congregants, campers, and everyone else we serve.

Undercover: A Head Covering Tutorial and Text Study
Since I’ve gotten married, I’ve covered my hair. I’ve been fascinated with the concept of head covering since. Its alternately, a sign of Jewish peoplehood, a shorthand for observance, and a portal (for some) for deep spirituality. I’ve definitely struggled with how/where/why I cover my hair and I’ve prepare a text study of some sources in Jewish literature for male and female head covering to answer these questions. The second part of the session would be kind of a tutorial on all the different head covering options I’ve found or experienced.(Have you ever wondered how to put on a shaitel? This is your place to ask questions and find out!)
